Why does Prison Toolkit help those facing non-violent and white collar charges? [From John Steele, our founder]
Because one’s work should, at least in some way, help others. And I hope to be of service to others who are starting out on their own journey through the criminal justice system. Getting impressive results requires impressive effort. Yet at the very moment we are expected to make life altering decisions, we find ourselves under intense stress and with little in the way of roadmaps/tools. As a white collar defendant, I found myself in that situation, and I had difficulty finding help. If you are on this site, you are probably very familiar with this emotional rollercoaster I just described. I was fortunate to have a legal background as a trial attorney, and several years to prepare for prison. I was able to paint a (true) picture of who I currently was, while laying the groundwork to (ethically) minimize my punishment. Of course, my time in pre-trial, prison camp, and supervised release taught me so many lessons, which I have enjoyed sharing with others to help them get through this phase of their life. Why Work with Us
At Prison Toolkit, most of our clients tell us that they never expected to be facing criminal charges. If you are in that same position, how are you going to catch up to what is happening? There are so many ways to mitigate negative perception and minimize punishment. For example, the PSR is a detailed report that the court will rely on heavily to determine a defendant’s sentence. Yet most people do not even realize that they can significantly influence that report. And fewer begin such efforts early enough.
The reality is that almost every person arrested for a crime is eventually sentenced to some form of punishment. And walking up to the door of a prison on your surrender date and ‘winging it’ is downright reckless. And stressful. Being prepared, from knowing basic prison etiquette to understanding how to file BP forms, allows a white collar inmate to focus on thriving, rather than simply surviving. Having a resource to call upon, from arrest through incarceration, means a lot of poor decisions and unnecessary punishment will be avoided. About The Prison Toolkit’s founder
John Steele, our founder, is a former trial attorney, certified personal trainer, and a student of stoicism. The Prison Toolkit began as John’s journey to successfully navigate the criminal justice system, and has become a vehicle to help others facing similarly difficult moments.
’The Pit’
A man is walking down a path when he falls into a hole. The walls are so steep, he can’t get out. A doctor passes by, and the guy shouts up, “Hey you, can you help me out?” The doctor writes a prescription, throws it down in the hole and moves on. Then a priest comes along, and the guy shouts up “Father, I’m down in this hole, can you help me out?” The priest writes out a prayer, throws it down in the hole and moves on. Then a third man walks by. “Hey, it’s me, can you help me out?” The third man jumps in the hole and the guy already trapped there says, “Are you stupid? Now we’re both down here.” The third man says, “Yeah, but I’ve been down here before, and I know the way out.”
